Simon...Oh, Simon

Currently it's quiet. Thank God.

Since we were going out to do a few errands with my mom this morning, I needed to get Simon up & ready within a certain time range. By 9:15 when I didn't hear him talking in his room, I assumed he was just quietly awake (are you laughing? Hey, it happens sometimes). I opened the door to his room, ready to greet a smiling face and his sweet "night time is over!" like every morning, but he was still conked out. Oops. He heard me come in and shuffled a bit, and soon after realized I was in his room, so he woke up. I'm sure he would have stayed asleep for a while, and eased himself awake slowly. When he's awakened prematurely we set ourselves up for a bit of a fussy day.

Fortunately, we had Grandma Lizzy as a distraction most of the day and didn't see much "meltdown" behavior.

However, we came home and it was time for "quiet time" (we used to call it a nap, but too much resistance from him with that. Semantics and a two year old!) and I started to see evidence of sleepiness. It manifested itself in excessive crying and highly uncooperative behavior.

After 3 attempts at putting him down, I think he's finally asleep. Unfortunately it was after 4:30PM by the time I think he fell asleep, so now we're probably going to have to wake him for dinner, thus repeating the process. Yikes. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

When he's this tired & fussy & exhausting, I have to reflect on the sweet little things that I love about him...and remember that this tired tantrum behavior happens very rarely. A few little anecdotes to focus on his sweetness:

A few days ago he was pretty tired & crabby but wouldn't sleep during quiet time either. When I finally gave up & went to get him, I asked: "Simon - why aren't you sleeping?" His answer? "Because I don't close my eyes." Too true, my little friend. Too true.

Today while we were driving with Mom, Simon was in the backseat talking about "Bobama." Close enough, my little Democrat-in-training.

Also, as we're going to bed at night I always go to check on him - make sure he's asleep & temperature appropriate & still diapered, etc. A few nights ago he awoke - just barely - and looked up at me with a squinty-eyed sleepy grin, and asked "where's my balloons?" Last night he did the same, but said "I want my cars all lined up on my rug." I think he actually dreams about these things that he loves so much.
