Simon's birthday cake...the evening of November 28th we prepped for his birthday party. The one thing he'd consistently requested was a fire engine birthday cake. We got ambitious.
Unfortunately, we didn't have red frosting or red sprinkles...so I picked all the red ones out of a multi-color blend of sprinkles in order to make the engine red. All the while saying "I love my son, I love my son..."
The cake just out of the pan...pre-cut, pre-assembly.
So proud to hold up the biggest red sprinkle...what? You can't see it?
The cake cutting template.
All set up to see how it'll work.
Ooh yeah. Look at those bad boys. All 60 of them or so.
Ready to frost & decorate!
Frosting itself was a huge challenge. Adam wisely didn't take pictures of me doing that part, because I probably looked angry. Did you know it's nearly impossible to frost the cut edges of cake with regular frosting? Yeah, me neither. Lesson learned. I'll do some research next time, instead of just winging it. Do you see how fast my sprinkle hand is moving though? I'm making those red "sprinklers" go the distance.
Not bad, huh? My first creative/cut/decorated cake...ever? And even a "kik-kak" ladder! It's not every day you get one of those.
His smiling face and amazement that we actually DID make a fire engine birthday cake was priceless. I might have cried. :) Happy 4th birthday to our big boy!

I love it! I have yet to be so creative with birthday cakes. Your engine is awesome.
I could totally see myself picking out the red sprinkles. The conversation in my mind would go like this: "why not just go and buy red sprinkles? it would be faster and only a couple of bucks!" "No way! We already have red sprinkles, I just need to spend a minute or two or fifty picking them out of this jar. I'm not wasting two bucks and the gas to get to the store! crazy."
I'm glad someone else thinks that way sometimes too!
Wow! I'm way behind on email, and just read this. But, just the other night, I was thinking about all the great cakes my mom used to make for us when we were kids. We always got to choose what we wanted, and then Mom would do her best to create it.
That night, I fell asleep with a smile on my face, remembering my favorite -- the castle cake. Thinking about it now, I'm sure it was a nightmare for my mom, figuring out how she would make a castle out of standard cake pans (she made turrets baked in tin cans).
Simon has such a great mom. And some day, he'll fall asleep with a smile on his face, remembering a cake you made for him.
Okay, now I have tears in my eyes and can't type any more.
