Wow!
I don't know where time goes. Not only did it get too close to Christmas before I updated about Simon's December 1 birthday, but 3 years of his being part of our family has gone by quickly too.
About a week before Simon's birthday I started talking to him about the upcoming event. I told him we were going to have family over & have a birthday party. I asked him if he knew how old he was and how old he'd be - he did. I asked him what he wanted for the party, and he had two things: birthday cake & presents. I guess he's paid attention! When I asked what kind of birthday cake, he was very specific. Every time I asked him over the course of the week he said the same thing: "pink and blue sprinklers, nuts, 3 candles because I'm almost 3, "S-I-M-O-N" for me, in the shape of a circle but we'll cut it into triangles, and chocolate!"

Instead of nuts (which I didn't think he'd actually like on the cake anyway) we used the M&M's from Grandma Lizzy. I bought a multi-pack of sprinkles for him to choose the pink & blue "sprinklers," but when it came down to it he wanted all of the colors. Can you blame him? Unfortunately the little balls of "sprinklers" didn't stick to the frosting - they bounced off and went "ping" all over the table & floor, but boy were they fun! They collected in all the ridges of frosting & the letters, so it was festive enough, as you can see. I let him do the M&M's and sprinkles and candles unassisted. His masterpiece! Such pride.
We split up the gifts and had cake halfway through the pile. The only people at the party besides the 4 of us Langes were Grandpa Gerry & Grandma Lizzy, Grandpa Dean (Grandma Jan was sick!), Aunt Karen & Cousin Sam. But family is generous and we had many many items to unwrap. The trains were a big hit, of course. Thomas & Friends have become a new language around here - Adam & I have to "bone up" on the lingo. We're learning!
Later in the evening...I'm not sure how exactly the evening progressed so that it resulted in Simon being half naked, covered in stickers, and waving around a plastic snow shovel, but I suspect it had something to do with Grandma Lizzy silliness.
We danced & sang, blew out candles & ate way too much chocolate, had great presents & hugs & kisses from family and generally had a lovely time. What a treat for Simon to celebrate his 3rd birthday with so many family members nearby!
Here for the rest of the photos from cake baking & eating, gift opening, half-naked sticker time, and a video or two of some Simon songs & dances.
